Before you worry about steps, robes or water-care kits, confirm three things: the tub can physically reach the garden, the base is finished, and the electrics match the model. Everything else is secondary.
The delivery triangle
Think of hot tub delivery preparation as a triangle:

- Base: the finished surface is level, solid and sized for the dry and filled weight.
- Power: the right socket or hard-wired supply is installed, tested and close enough.

What counts as ready
Ready does not mean “the landscaper says he will finish it the day before”. It means the slab has cured, paving is secure, decking has been checked, the electrician has finished, the isolator is fitted, and the route is free of bins, planters, loose gravel, low branches and half-built pergolas.
If the tub is going under a gazebo, through a side gate, round a tight corner or onto a deck, measure twice. Then send photos and measurements to the supplier. Good delivery teams would rather tell you about a problem beforehand than discover it with a £5,000 spa balanced on a trolley.

Most problems are visible before anyone starts the lorry. A decent supplier should ask for access photos, dimensions, base type, power details and final position. Some will do a site survey for complex deliveries. If yours does not ask much, you should still volunteer the information.
The access form is not admin fluff
The access form protects both sides. It tells the delivery team what kit to bring and tells you whether a normal delivery is realistic. Fill it in like the delivery depends on it, because it does.
Expect to provide:
- Model and dimensions: width, depth, height and dry weight.

Ask the supplier to write down what the delivery includes. Some sales pages use “free delivery” to mean kerbside drop-off. Others include siting, basic positioning and a handover. Commissioning, chemical setup and old hot tub removal may be separate.

Corners catch people out because the tub needs to swing. A side passage that is 100cm wide may look fine until the route turns sharply between a wall and a fence. If the delivery team cannot rotate the tub, the width on the straight section is irrelevant.
Use a cardboard template or tape on the ground if the turn is tight. It feels a bit ridiculous. It is still cheaper than paying for a failed delivery and a second visit.
Protect the route
Clear the route properly before the team arrives. Move bins, pots, kids’ bikes, garden furniture, hose reels and low hanging baskets. Lift fragile paving if it is loose. Warn the team about inspection covers or soft patches.

Delivery is not the time to discover that the base slopes, the cable is too short, or the outside tap is on the other side of the house. The team can usually position the tub, but they cannot fix unfinished preparation.

The base must be level, flat and able to take the filled weight. Concrete pads, reinforced paving and properly built bases are common. Also think about where water will go when you drain it. A full hot tub is hundreds or thousands of litres. If the only drainage route runs across a neighbour’s patio, fix that before the first fill.
Kerbside, Specialist Delivery and Crane Lifts
Delivery wording matters. A “delivered” hot tub may mean it arrives at the kerb on a pallet. “Delivered and installed” may mean it is moved into place, connected where appropriate, filled enough for checks, and handed over. Ask for the service level in writing.
Kerbside delivery
Kerbside delivery is cheapest and least useful for hard-shell tubs unless you have your own moving plan. The driver may not move it into the garden. You are responsible for manpower, trolley, route protection and risk.
I would only accept kerbside delivery for a hard-shell tub if the supplier has made the limitation clear and you have a professional mover booked. Four mates and a hopeful attitude is not a plan. Hot tubs are bulky, slippery and expensive to repair.
Specialist delivery
Specialist spa teams use sledges, dollies, boards and lifting equipment designed for awkward loads. They are worth paying for when the access route includes tight turns, steps, slopes, gravel, delicate paving or a long carry.

The base is not accepted

Inspect the tub before signing. Look at the acrylic shell, cabinet corners, cover, steps and control panel. Take photos if anything looks marked. Minor cabinet scuffs can happen, but cracks, dents or panel damage should be recorded immediately.
